Buyers new to sourcing hex bolts often assume 'hex bolt' is a single specification, but the standard, grade, and thread pitch all move independently of each other. A DIN 933 M12 bolt in property class 8.8 is a different part from an ISO 4014 M12 in class 10.9, even though both look identical to the eye — the difference only shows up under load or in a mill test certificate. Getting this wrong doesn't usually fail immediately; it fails later, under stress, which is why buyers who skip specification detail on a first order often come back after a field failure asking for exact traceability on the next one.

Full-thread (DIN 933 / ISO 4017) versus partial-thread (DIN 931 / ISO 4014) is the other decision point that's easy to overlook. Full-thread bolts are more forgiving on unknown grip lengths and are typically cheaper to stock in volume; partial-thread bolts perform better in shear applications because the unthreaded shank carries load more evenly across the joint. Specifying the wrong one won't be visible in a parts bin, but it changes how the joint actually behaves.
