Dowel pins and cotter pins solve opposite problems and get confused surprisingly often by buyers new to precision hardware: a dowel pin's entire job is to NOT move, locating two parts to each other with an interference fit ground to tight tolerance, while a cotter pin's entire job is to be removable, securing a castellated nut or clevis joint against loosening without needing tools beyond a pair of pliers.
